Only the western Allies called it   Checkpoint Charlie:

the only crossing point for foreigners and   Allied forces after the Wall was built.

Up until 20 years ago the site inspired   fear, so why rebuild it in Brussels?

Brussels wants to show that   the fall of the Wall 20 years ago

influenced the history of Europe and   changed the lives of all European citizens.

While world leaders   gathered in Berlin,

a little piece of Berlin   came to Brussels

to remind us that it's only 20 years   since the Wall fell.

Deliberately placed next to the EP,   a symbol of democracy in the EU.

But some countries in Europe   still await democratic freedoms.

In my opinion the process   of democratisation

is one that goes on for ever.   It’s never completely finished.

The Belgian Foreign Minister attended the   reconstruction of this piece of the Wall.

A reminder of the past,   it's also a warning for the future.

I think it’s good to remind people,   right here at the foot of the EP,

that 20 years ago   there were two separate Europes.

The USSR is history, but it doesn't mean   democracy is no longer in danger.

Those lucky to be free   have a duty to remember it.
