Thousands of young researchers and students gathered in Turin for the Euroscience Open Forum research biennial. For MEPs it was an occasion to reflect on the future of research in Europe.

Research in the spotlight

This isn’t just any pizza party.   At this table is sitting Harold Kroto,

surrounded by   young researchers and students.

This is Turin, the research   biennial Euroscience Open Forum.

More than 3000 youngsters   have been taking part in it.

The lucky ones have had lunch with   personalities like the ERC President.

I see so much enthusiasm   and high quality.

This is important. It's not just enthusiasm,   but high quality

Knowing that her career process   hasn't been smooth either inspires me.

For the MEPs present,   the event has been an occasion

to reflect on modernising   the European research area.

Many complain about the bureaucracy   they face in their bid for funds.

We need to trust the best scientists,   the best-run research institutes.

They don’t need checking and paperwork.   We want them to get on with the work,

to spend the money on research,   not on administration.

Support for applied research   and public sector commitment

could help bring   the best brains back to Europe.

Young people have   the ability to listen and to learn,

gather knowledge from around the world,   and then came back

and help us to have   an innovative strategy for the EU.

A number of seminars   have been held in Turin

on how to choose the best career and on   how to transform an idea into a business.

They’ll meet again in 2012,   this time in Dublin.

By then the crucial negotiations for more   EU funding for research will have started.
