European elections represent a crucial moment: they give EU citizens a say in the political direction of the European Union. After declining ever since the first European direct elections in 1979, electoral turn out increased in the 2019 elections to reach 50.6 % largely due to youth participation (according to a post-election Eurobarometer survey). Echoing the 2019 motto 'This time I'm voting', the 2024 one might be: 'I did it again!' The 2024 European elections could be a turning point for youth engagement for several reasons

Eiropas Parlaments 2024. gada jūlijā apstiprināja Urzulu fon der Leienu otrajam termiņam Komisijas priekšsēdētājas amatā. Viņa vadīs komisāru grupu - pa vienam no katras ES valsts, kas nākamo piecu gadu laikā rosinās ES tiesību aktu pieņemšanu un pārraudzīs to īstenošanu.    
 
Eiropas Komisijas priekšsēdētāja ievēlēšana ir viens no pirmajiem Parlamenta uzdevumiem pēc vēlēšanām Eiropā. 
    
ES valstu vadītāji izvirza Komisijas priekšsēdētāja amata kandidātu, ņemot vērā Eiropas vēlēšanu rezultātus.    
   
Kandidātam ir jāsaņem Parlamenta apstiprinājums, aizklātā balsojumā gūstot Parlamenta deputātu vairākuma plus viena deputāta atbalstu.   
   
Ja kandidāts nesaņem vajadzīgo balsu vairākumu, Eiropadomei mēneša laikā jāierosina cits kandidāts.

Kas ir Roberta Metsola, Eiropas Parlamenta priekšsēdētāja, kura 2024. gada jūlijā tika ievēlēta amatā otro reizi pēc kārtas? Kāpēc izvēlējās tieši viņu, un kādi ir viņas pienākumi? 
 
Ik pēc divarpus gadiem Eiropas Parlaments izraugās cilvēku, kas to pārstāvēs attiecībās ar citām ES iestādēm un pasaules kontekstā. Parlamenta priekšsēdētāju ievēl aizklātā balsojumā, kas notiek pirmajā plenārsēdē pēc vēlēšanām.
 
Amatu iegūst tas kandidāts, kurš saņēmis absolūtu balsu vairākumu. 
 
Priekšsēdētājs arī vada Parlamenta darbību, plenārsēdes un paziņo par ES budžeta pieņemšanu galīgajā variantā. Šie pienākumi ietver arī Parlamenta viedokļa izklāstu katras Eiropadomes sanāksmes sākumā.

Parliament responded with measures that strengthened the EU and its economy while standing up for European values.

Five candidates for the European Commission presidency gathered in the European Parliament, in Brussels, to debate issues that affect everyone in the European Union, from jobs and migration to climate, innovation and security.

The Eurovision debate was organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and moderated by Martin Řezníček (Czech TV) and Annelies Beck (VRT, Belgium).

The following candidates took part:

Walter Baier (Austria, European Left)
Sandro Gozi (Italy, Renew Europe Now)
Ursula von der Leyen (Germany, European People’s Party)
Terry Reintke (Germany, European Greens)
Nicolas Schmit (Luxembourg, Party of European Socialists)

The position of each candidate on the stage, the first speaker on each topic and the order of the ‘spotlight’ interviews were decided on 16 May by a draw organised by the EBU in the European Parliament.
