2024. aasta juulis kiitis Euroopa Parlament heaks Ursula von der Leyeni teise ametiaja Euroopa Komisjoni presidendina. Ta juhatab järgmised viis aastat volinikke – ühte igast ELi liikmesriigist – kes esitavad uusi ELi õigusakte ja jälgivad nende rakendamist.

ELi liikmesriikide juhid esitavad Euroopa Parlamendi valimistulemustest lähtudes komisjoni presidendiks ühe kandidaadi.    
   
Kandidaat vajab parlamendi heakskiidu saamiseks salajasel hääletusel liikmete lihtenamust.   
   
Kui kandidaat vajalikku enamust ei saa, peab Euroopa Ülemkogu kuu aja jooksul uue kandidaadi esitama.

Five candidates for the European Commission presidency gathered in the European Parliament, in Brussels, to debate issues that affect everyone in the European Union, from jobs and migration to climate, innovation and security.

The Eurovision debate was organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and moderated by Martin Řezníček (Czech TV) and Annelies Beck (VRT, Belgium).

The following candidates took part:

Walter Baier (Austria, European Left)
Sandro Gozi (Italy, Renew Europe Now)
Ursula von der Leyen (Germany, European People’s Party)
Terry Reintke (Germany, European Greens)
Nicolas Schmit (Luxembourg, Party of European Socialists)

The position of each candidate on the stage, the first speaker on each topic and the order of the ‘spotlight’ interviews were decided on 16 May by a draw organised by the EBU in the European Parliament.
