War crimes and other serious violations of Human Rights in the former Yugoslavia: extracts from the exchange of views with the representatives of the RECOM initiative

SOUNDBITE (English), Heidi HAUTALA (Greens/EFA, FI), The background of the initiative is that the war in FYROM led to the hundreds of thousands of deaths and more than 2 million internally displaced persons. Tehre are stil high number of missiong people, there are mass graves and war criminals a large. The issue is whethere the political authorities in the countries are making a substantial effort towards reconciliation and we would like to give a lot of visibility to the RECOM initiative.

SOUNDBITE (English), Eduard KUKAN (EPP, SK), I would like to stress the representativity of this initiative as they are representatives of all almost countries from the region and that show the willgness to cooperate in this very sensitive issues.

SOUNDBITE (Serbian), Natasa KANDIC, Humanitarian Law Center , Serbia, The RECOM inititaive is our local response to our local need to pace the past. Our initiative is an attempt tonrespond to the poossibility with the ICTY to have to c&acute;face the truth and put an end to the problem of facing the truth in the ex fromer Yougoslavia.

SOUNDBITE (Serbian), Sudbin MUSIC, Association of priosners Prijedor 92, Bosnia Herzegovina, We are the survivors of the worst concentration camps after WWII , Iwant to say to what extend the community in Bosnia Herzegovina had to face in the past in this holocaust , it was a factory of death and it was owned by a European company "Kereterem".

SOUNDBITE (Serbian), Dzenana KARUP DRUSKO, Associations BH Journalists, What might be a problem in BH, we still have a denial of crimes , the Prime Minister of the Serb Republic still claims that there was no genocide in Srbebrenica.

SOUNDBITE (English), Daliborka ULJAREVIC, Centre for Civic Education, Montenegro, The regional response is the only one which move the things ahead and on the other hand we have got the support of the MOntengro Parliament who along with others Parliaments have support the inititative which I think is of the utmost importance.
