7 Days: A brighter future for the Mediterranean?

It has only taken a few days  to set up a new Greek government.

Europeans can breathe again.  Greece has chosen to stay in the eurozone.

But does that mean it's all over?  Not according to many analysts,

because the burden of debt hasn't changed.

What does the future hold for the eurozone,  for Greece in general?

The topic is always on the front pages,  as Greece's euro exit is no longer taboo.

For this 40th programme I'm pleased  to welcome Anni Podimata. Hello.

You're been a Member  of the European Parliament since 2007

and your specialist area  is economic and monetary affairs.

So, to say the least, you have had  plenty to keep you busy recently.

we'll have one minute where you can  answer only yes or no. Off we go.

If you had been offered a post in the Greek  government, would you have accepted?

Do you think this government can really  bring Greece out of the crisis?

You were a journalist,  a correspondent in Paris.

When you see Greece's European policy,  don't you want to return to your former job?

When the Germans say,  'Pay your taxes first and then we'll talk',

Should the Church in Greece pay taxes?  -Absolutely.

Is there a real problem with  the perception of taxes in Greece?

A prime minister on sick leave,  a finance minister who has resigned...

Do you think it's started badly?  Is it a bad omen?

Greece's aid programme  must be renegotiated.

Do you agree it must be renegotiated?  -On some points.

On Monday MEPs met  national parliamentarians

to discuss new rules  for the Common Agricultural Policy.

For the first time,  the European Parliament does have a say,

but MEPs don't want to discuss it  without knowing the budget

that will be devoted to the CAP  from now till 2020.

Agricultural spending currently represents  over 40% of the European budget.

Nearly 10 years on from its last revision,  the CAP now has to face new challenges,

like climate change  and the protection of biodiversity.

Safer and greener motorbikes  are what the EU wants.

and hope to reach a deal  with the Member States.

Today over 30 million motorbikes  are on European roads

particularly concerning cleaner engines  compared to those of cars.

improving the image of financial markets  with socially responsible investments

An EU label for the Social  Entrepreneurship Fund is being debated.

The idea is to attract private capital  to activities for collective purposes.

According to rapporteur Sophie Auconie,  this project meets two needs,

to diversify the financial resources  of social businesses

and to bring financial markets  closer to the real economy.

This new project will allow entrepreneurs  not to be solely dependent on public grants.

We saw in Los Cabos at the G20 meeting  a real cacophony from the Europeans

who didn't know how to explain  to their colleagues from other continents

why they couldn't get out of the crisis.

I'll pick out a phrase from Robert Zoellick,  the World Bank President,

Is it really too little and too late?  What can we do?

describes the situation  that we have experienced

from the beginning of the crisis up till now.

But now, due to the fact that  we weren't able to limit the crisis,

I think that all of us in the European Union  are facing this dilemma.

We have to make substantial efforts  to speak with a single voice

to safeguard  the economic and monetary union

So we didn't do what was necessary,  we used small fixes.

Now people are talking about  other solutions,

like the need for a banking union  to get out of the crisis.

At European summits, they talk about  concentrating on long-term measures

What does that mean for Greece  in the near future, and also later?

The two are linked, I think. Some things  need to be done at national level

and some decisions  need to be taken quickly

and implemented quickly  at European level.

I might even say at global level  as we're talking about the financial markets.

So Greece, as you just said, has made  a choice with the elections on 17 June.

We have chosen to belong to the eurozone

and that choice includes respect for  the rules and the obligations that we have

firstly because we are  part of this eurozone family

and also because we are receiving  financial help

from our European partners and others.  So that's clear.

On the other hand, I think  it's in the interest of us Greeks,

that we should proceed with  the necessary modifications

in the programme that's already in place,

the programme of fiscal adjustment  in Greece,

so that the programme is applied  and implemented successfully.

That's clearly in our interest, but it's also  in the interest of the whole of the eurozone.

That means learning the lessons from  two years of the adjustment programme.
