The European Parliament has awarded the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia.

During the ceremony at December’s plenary session in Strasbourg, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola paid tribute to their fight to restore democracy in Venezuela.

Parliament recognises the opposition as the legitimate winners of Venezuela’s July 2024 presidential election, and condemns the electoral fraud and rights violations carried out by the Maduro regime that stayed in power despite mass protests.

The Sakharov Prize is the EU’s highest award for human rights defenders. The other finalists from 2024 were Azerbaijani anti-corruption activist Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu and the Women of the Sun and Women Wage Peace movements, which promote reconciliation and understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.

Европейският парламент присъди наградата „Сахаров“ за свобода на мисълта за 2024 г. на венецуелския опозиционен лидер Мария Корина Мачадо и на новоизбрания президент Едмундо Гонсалес Урутия.

На церемонията на декемврийската пленарна сесия в Страсбург председателят на Европейския парламент Роберта Мецола отдаде почит на борбата им за възстановяване на демокрацията във Венецуела.

Парламентът признава опозицията за легитимен победител на президентските избори във Венецуела през юли 2024 г. и осъжда изборните измами и нарушенията на правата на човека, извършени от режима на Мадуро, който остана на власт въпреки масовите протести.

Наградата „Сахаров“ е най-високото отличие на ЕС за защитници на правата на човека. Останалите финалисти за 2024 г. бяха азербайджанският активист за борба с корупцията д-р Губад Ибадоглу и движенията за мир „Women Wage Peace” и „Women of the Sun”, които насърчават помирението и разбирателството между израелци и палестинци.

The European Parliament has awarded the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia.

Parliament recognised the opposition as rightful winners of July 2024’s presidential election and rejected the widespread electoral fraud and the proclaimed victory of Nicolas Maduro.

With the EU’s highest honour for human rights defenders, Parliament pays tribute to Ms Machado and Mr González Urrutia’s fight to restore democracy, and stands with those defending freedom against authoritarian regimes worldwide.

On 27 November 2024, during the plenary session in Brussels; MEPs discuss the Commission's proposal for a Council recommendation on smoke and aerosol-free environments, to replace Council Recommendation 2009/C296/02.The proposed recommendation calls on Member States to extend the coverage of smoke free environment policies to key outdoor areas, including: outdoor recreational areas for children (public playgrounds, amusement parks, swimming pools, zoos and other similar outdoor spaces); outdoor areas connected to healthcare and education premises (hospitals, health centres, schools, training centres); outdoor areas associated to a place of work; public buildings; service establishments (restaurants, bars, cafés); transport stops and stations (bus, tram, train, airports). It also recommends that Member States extend smoke-free policies to emerging products such as electronic cigarettes.
