MEPs outline proposals to improve the protection of EU citizens against exposure to second-hand smoke and aerosols, including from electronic cigarettes. In Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, the Commission has previously announced its intention to update the current Council Recommendation on smoke-free environments, which dates back to 20019. A revision was needed to extend its scope to certain emerging products, such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco, due to the rapid market growth and appeal of such products in recent years, especially among young people. The Commission recommends EU countries reduce the risk of second-hand exposure by banning the use of all tobacco products in certain outdoor spaces, such as public playgrounds and amusement parks, areas related to restaurants/cafés, public transportation, healthcare and education establishments, as well as workplaces.

The European Parliament has awarded the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia.

Parliament recognised the opposition as rightful winners of July 2024’s presidential election and rejected the widespread electoral fraud and the proclaimed victory of Nicolas Maduro.

With the EU’s highest honour for human rights defenders, Parliament pays tribute to Ms Machado and Mr González Urrutia’s fight to restore democracy, and stands with those defending freedom against authoritarian regimes worldwide.

Anfang November befragten die Abgeordneten die künftigen Kommissionsmitglieder im Rahmen spezieller Anhörungen, um ihre Kompetenzen und bisherigen Leistungen zu beurteilen.
Die Kommission schlägt Richtlinien und Gesetze vor, die von wesentlicher Bedeutung für die 450 Millionen Europäerinnen und Europäer sind. On 27 November 2024, during the plenary session in Brussels; MEPs discuss the Commission's proposal for a Council recommendation on smoke and aerosol-free environments, to replace Council Recommendation 2009/C296/02.The proposed recommendation calls on Member States to extend the coverage of smoke free environment policies to key outdoor areas, including: outdoor recreational areas for children (public playgrounds, amusement parks, swimming pools, zoos and other similar outdoor spaces); outdoor areas connected to healthcare and education premises (hospitals, health centres, schools, training centres); outdoor areas associated to a place of work; public buildings; service establishments (restaurants, bars, cafés); transport stops and stations (bus, tram, train, airports). It also recommends that Member States extend smoke-free policies to emerging products such as electronic cigarettes.
