Den globala coronapandemin och Rysslands krig mot Ukraina har haft en stark påverkan på arbetet i Europaparlamentet. Men den nionde valperioden som snart är till ända har inte bara präglats av hälsokrisen och de geopolitiska utmaningarna. Parlamentet har också satsat på den gröna och digitala omställningen för att stärka EU:s motståndskraft och demokrati.

Mot bakgrund av kapplöpningen om global teknologisk dominans lanserade EU 2020 en strategi för att stärka industrin. Det ledde i sin tur till förslaget om en europeisk plattform för strategisk teknik (STEP), för att göra något åt de betydande investeringsbehoven. Plattformen skulle använda befintliga EU-medel för att göra EU mer innovativt, hållbart och självförsörjande. Den är ett steg mot en europeisk suveränitetsfond som ska stärka industrins kapacitet ytterligare.

Nuförtiden kan beslut automatiskt fattas av system som använder maskininlärning för att hela tiden bli allt bättre. Men de här systemen anses fortfarande sakna det ”mänskliga perspektivet” och den flexibilitet som krävs för att få fram de särskilda nyanserna i vissa specifika situationer. De är inte ”smarta” nog att dölja de ibland snedvridna data som ligger till grund för besluten de tar. Trots detta kan de faktiskt fatta rättvisare beslut än vi människor, men då krävs det att de matas med data som kontrollerats ordentligt.
