Міжнародний жіночий день відзначається щорічно 8 березня, щоб вшанувати досягнення жінок і привернути увагу до прав жінок. Це нагода підвищити рівень обізнаності про такі питання, як гендерна рівність, репродуктивні права, боротьба з насильством та жорстоким поводженням з жінками. Рівність між жінками і чоловіками завжди була однією з основних цінностей і цілей Європейського Союзу, але поставлена мета все ще не досягнута повністю.

Як ЄС бореться за права жінок

Každý rok 8. marca oslavujeme Medzinárodný deň žien ako prejav uznania toho, čo ženy dosiahli. Zároveň máme príležitosť upozorniť na to, že musíme chrániť ich práva. Je dôležité zvyšovať povedomie o otázkach, ako sú rovnosť medzi ženami a mužmi, reprodukčné práva či boj proti násiliu voči ženám a ich zneužívaniu. Rovnosť medzi ženami a mužmi bola odjakživa jednou z hlavných hodnôt Európskej únie a jedným z jej prvoradých cieľov, ktorý sa však stále nepodarilo úplne dosiahnuť.

Európska únia bojuje za práva žien

Mrzačenie ženských pohlavných orgánov sa vzťahuje na akýkoľvek druh úmyselnej zmeny alebo poškodenia ženských pohlavných orgánov z iných ako lekárskych dôvodov. Vykonáva sa z kultúrnych, náboženských a niekedy aj spoločenských dôvodov, nemá však žiadne zdravotné opodstatnenie. Mrzačenie pohlavných orgánov môže mať vážne následky na zdravie a duševné blaho žien a dievčat – a to tak bezprostredné, ako aj dlhodobé. Čo robí Európska únia nato, aby sa tento škodlivý zákrok prestal vykonávať?

Gender-balanced representation among the decision-makers of the European Union is an important step towards full realisation of the principle of equality between women and men enshrined in the EU Treaties. The Union has made steady and significant progress, starting from a very low presence of women among EU Commissioners and Members of the European Parliament at the time when those institutions were created. The European Parliament is today one of the world's most gender-balanced representative assemblies, but there are still significant divergences between EU countries.
