The 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November to 12 December 2023. A delegation of MEPs participate in the UN COP28 Climate Change Conference, where the first Global Stocktake, aiming to provide an overall picture of the implementation progress of the Paris Agreement, take place. SOUNDBITE (English), Peter LIESE (EPP, DE), Chair of the EP delegation to COP28, The key challenge here is that Europe has already legislation which brings us down not only 55% but 57%, compared to 1990. But many other big economies, not only United States, Australia, Japan, but also China and Gulf States they don't have similar commitments, and that has to change. And also when it comes to climate finance. The rich countries need to help the poor countries so that they can cope with the challenge.Mitigattion, new technologies, but also adaptation, to prepare people against flooding and so on. But also here it cannot be only Europe who pays, we need also to appeal to others to do their fair share.
