MEPs debate debate the need to strengthen EU readiness, preparedness, and solidarity mechanisms following recent extreme weather events in southern Europe. MEPs question Commission representatives on EU action to prevent and prepare for natural disasters, following the launch of the 2025 EU’s Preparedness Union Strategy, and to support EU countries affected by enhancing civil protection and related funding. In early 2026, Portugal, southern Italy and Malta experienced severe weather, including cyclone Harry and storm Kristin, which caused casualties and significant damage to coastal areas. The storms brought floods, landslides, and the highest ever recorded waves in the Mediterranean.

MEPs debate on strengthening EU action on cancer to mark the World Cancer Day (4 February). Established in the 2021 Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, EU action focuses on prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, and quality of life for cancer patients, survivors and care, through 10 flagship initiatives. Cancer is currently the second leading cause of mortality in the EU, after cardiovascular diseases. In 2024, around 2.7 million people were diagnosed with cancer in the EU and around 1.27 million died. World Cancer Day takes place every year on 4 February. The three-year “United by unique” campaign (2025-2027) aims to raise awareness of the importance of people-centred care.

MEPs debate on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark and the need for a united EU response to US blackmail attempts. European governments rejected US plans to acquire Greenland, warning that it would undermine sovereignty, NATO cohesion, and transatlantic security. Many EU governments, as well as Denmark, have stated that decisions on Greenland’s status rest exclusively with Denmark and Greenland, emphasised the importance of collective, NATO-led Arctic security, and cautioned against unilateral actions that could destabilise allied relations and regional stability. The authorities of Denmark and Greenland reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and called instead for cooperation. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

MEPs debate with Council and Commission representatives ways to promote and protect the EU’s digital rules and reduce tech dependency on non-EU actors. The debate focuses on the importance of building a secure and autonomous digital economy and of implementing the EU’s digital rules in full. These rules include the Digital Services and Digital Markets Acts, the AI Act, the Cyber Resilience Act, the Data Act, the Chips Act and the Crypto-assets rules. MEPs call on the Commission to make full use of its regulatory powers, to maintain the highest standards for its citizens and businesses and to step up investment in EU digital infrastructure. Since the EU-US trade agreement was reached over the summer, pressure to defend the EU’s digital rulebook has been rising. The debate focus on support for Ukraine, relations with Russia, China, the Middle East, climate change, and trade. MEPs bring up security issues, in light of Donald Trump’s repeated demands that Europe spend more on defence. Speaking in the Committee on Foreign Affairs recently, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned MEPs that “NATO’s current two percent defence spending target is not nearly enough (...) to stay safe.”
