A former Goldman Sachs executive gets the green light to succeed Trichet and promises to be tough on inflation.

MEPs approve Mario Draghi as the next ECB President

Confident before his hearing,  Mario Draghi,

never felt like he was  in the hot seat before the MEPs.

One thing is sure: his 8-year-term  begins in a much tenser context

than his predecessor  Jean-Claude Trichet's.

We’re looking at 8 years in which we  must get to grips with the eurozone crisis.

We’ve got to have sound management  of the euro, to establish the confidence

of our citizens in the euro and  in the eurozone: to get out of this mess.

Doctor of economics,  former Goldman Sachs vice chair,

the governor of Italy’s Central Bank Mario  Draghi offered an outline of his approach:

he’s against renegotiating the Greek debt,

but leaves the door open  to private investors.

Firstly, we in Greece say,  ‘we don’t pay anything!’

Secondly, we want an internationally  controlled test of our debt,

For Mario Draghi, the ECB’s primary task  remains keeping inflation under control,

He didn’t give specifics  on guarantees to Ireland either.

but if they were to give us  the same money over the medium term,

Conclusion: the man undoubtedly has the  abilities and the knowledge for the post,
