The Prodi Commission was the European Commission in office between 1999 and 2004. The administration was led by former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi.

The commission took office on 16 September 1999 following the scandal and subsequent resignation of the Santer Commission which had damaged the reputation of the institution. The College consisted of 20 Commissioners which grew to 30 following the Enlargement of the European Union in 2004. It was the last commission to see two members allocated to the larger member states.

Appointment of the Prodi Commission

Mr Romano PRODI's Commission was made up of twenty Members, two from the five most heavily populated states and one from each of the remaining ten. The team was presented on 9 July 1999.

The team of European Commissioners - proposed by its President designate - 'shall be subject as a body to a vote of approval by the European Parliament'. Before taking this vote, European Parliament committees conduct hearings with the proposed Commissioners in accordance with Parliament's internal Rules of Procedure.

The Fossoli camp was an internment camp in Italy (Carpi, Emilia-Romagna), established during World War II. The massacre of Cibeno (Eccidio di Cibeno) has been perpetrated by the SS on July 12, 1944 at the shooting range of Cibeno, where 67 people locked up in the Camp of Fossoli were shot.
