MEPs debate on EU Defence Readiness. A draft resolution says that, due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, military mobility has become an essential enabler for common European security and defence. It is also now crucial for the security of the EU’s eastern flank, in particular the Baltic countries and Poland. Given the movement of military equipment across the EU can be a protracted effort, MEPs suggest removing existing administrative and financial barriers, as well as infrastructure obstacles to create a ‘military Schengen’.

Joint debate - EU Defence Readiness: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on EU response to the continuous airspace violations and sabotage of critical infrastructure in the EU originating from Russia and Belarus. The debate comes after Lithuania shut its border crossings with Belarus at the end of October 2025 after authorities detected smuggling balloons drifting from Belarus into Lithuanian airspace. The balloons, officials say, posed a threat to civil aviation and are part of a continuous hybrid operation orchestrated by dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s Belarusian government. The plenary debate with the Commission is also expected to refer to a recent explosion on a railway line in Poland, which Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk referred to as “an unprecedented act of sabotage”.

In summer 2024, while presenting her political programme to Parliament, Ursula von der Leyen said that active EU engagement with the Middle East would be one of her priorities if re-elected as Commission President. MEPs debate on the need to detect and to counter sabotage by the Russian shadow fleet, damaging critical undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. In recent months, there has been an increase in in instances of ships damaging undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. The latest incident occurred in late December 2024 with the severing of an electricity cable running between Finland and Estonia. Shortly after, the Finnish Coast Guard boarded the oil tanker Eagle S and steered it to a Finnish port. Although officially sailing under a Cook Islands flag, there are suspicions the vessel is part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”. Following these incidents, NATO has launched a new mission to protect critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. According to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the mission dubbed “Baltic Sentry” would involve more patrol aircraft, warships and drones. First part of MEPs debate.
