MEPs debate the urgent actions required to boost EU competitiveness, deepen the single market, and reduce the cost of living. MEPs outline their priorities for transforming the recommendations in the 2024 Draghi report into reality. They also assess the work already undertaken on the recommendations. In September 2023 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asked Mario Draghi to prepare a report on the future of European competitiveness. The report was completed in September 2024. It looks at the challenges faced by industry and companies and outlines how Europe will no longer be able to rely on many of the factors that have supported growth in the past. It lays out a diagnosis and provides recommendations to put Europe on a different trajectory. Second part of MEPs debate.

MEPs debate on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark and the need for a united EU response to US blackmail attempts. European governments rejected US plans to acquire Greenland, warning that it would undermine sovereignty, NATO cohesion, and transatlantic security. Many EU governments, as well as Denmark, have stated that decisions on Greenland’s status rest exclusively with Denmark and Greenland, emphasised the importance of collective, NATO-led Arctic security, and cautioned against unilateral actions that could destabilise allied relations and regional stability. The authorities of Denmark and Greenland reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and called instead for cooperation. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark.

MEPs debate on tackling AI deepfakes and sexual exploitation on social media. Parliament call for stronger and faster enforcement of EU laws to prevent AI tools from creating illegal sexual content. The debate with Council and Commission follows the latest scandal related to reports the social media platform X is facilitating the creation of sexually explicit images of women and children through its AI chatbot Grok. In recent weeks, the platform has been subjected to international condemnation, with several governments banning the platform and others launching investigations into this so-called “pornification” feature putting women and minors at risk of abuse.

MEPs debate on phasing out Russian natural gas imports. This legislative proposal comes in response to Russia’s systematic weaponisation of energy supplies, a pattern documented over nearly two decades and escalating with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The 2022 invasion came with further deliberate market manipulation, including Gazprom’s unprecedented underfilling of EU storage facilities and abrupt halts to pipelines, causing energy prices to spike to up to eight times their pre-crisis levels.

Phasing out Russian natural gas imports, improving monitoring of potential energy dependencies and amending Regulation: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on the protection of minors online. MEPs debate a report calling for accelerating the enforcement of the EU Digital Services Act and the AI Act, while closing legal gaps to ensure online services are safe for minors to use. Sounding the alarm over the mental health risks and rising social media addiction among children and adolescents, MEPs want to ban the most harmful addictive practices for minors and for the EU to take action against persuasive technologies and practices such as targeted ads, influencer marketing, addictive design, loot boxes and dark patterns. The text proposes a common EU-wide minimum age threshold of 16 years for accessing social media platforms and the development of privacy preserving age assurance systems.

MEPs debate with Council and Commission representatives ways to promote and protect the EU’s digital rules and reduce tech dependency on non-EU actors. The debate focuses on the importance of building a secure and autonomous digital economy and of implementing the EU’s digital rules in full. MEPs call on the Commission to make full use of its regulatory powers, to maintain the highest standards for its citizens and businesses and to step up investment in EU digital infrastructure.

Promoting EU digital rules: protecting European sovereignty: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate with the Commission and the Danish Council Presidency the details of the trade agreement with the US, and possible deals with other countries. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump announced a deal on tariffs and trade on 27 July, but questions about its implementation details remain. The prospect of further deals with other trade partners will also be discussed. MEPs are likely to raise the agreement concluded with Mercosur, whose ratification is pending, and the agreed update of the agreement with Mexico, among others.
