From dancers generating electricity in nightclubs to cyclists powering Christmas trees in Denmark, Europeans are taking the green initiative. Though the Copenhagen climate summit was largely unsuccesssul, we can take heart from these ingenious ideas. Euro

The fires are put out   on the failed Copenhagen summit.

The EU is disappointed that   other world powers didn’t follow its lead

Meanwhile green initiatives   are blossoming throughout Europe.

EuroparlTV takes you on a tour   of these green initiatives in the EU.

The green attitude should have reached   its peak in Copenhagen December 2009.

The Christmas tree   was lit with green bulbs,

and it was these cyclists   who powered it by pedalling.

Copenhagen didn't achieve   the ambitious EU goals.

But the EU is by far   the leading example of green initiatives.

Planes like this one which brought world   leaders to Copenhagen are often blamed.

However, a Scandinavian company   shows that it is possible to save energy.

They created a landing method   which reduces fuel consumption by 10%.

Of course I can fly faster,   but it is better to fly slower,

it burns less fuel in low thrust   than with a lot of thrust.

And now to London, one of the most   animated nocturnal capitals of Europe.

A nightclub is powered by its own wind   turbine and solar energy system.

The dance floor is so high-tech   that when people get their groove on,

it generates its own electricity   using the piezoelectricity concept.

Crystals and ceramics   create an electrical charge.

Pedestrians and cyclists   get free entry.

In the land of wine and fashion,   green initiatives are on the increase.

In Haute-Provence, the Alps   a small business owner created a turbine

with the aim of producing drinking water   using the air’s humidity.

If the idea is copied on a large-scale   the invention could be very useful,

I collect the water   from the air conditioning

to inject it into the cistern   and that was the beginning of the idea

to get water from air   for our own purposes,

to make household appliances work,   to bathe and for washing machines.

In Paris ethical fashion has been   doing the rounds on catwalks for years

This young designer   focuses on underwear.

Her clients wear underwear made from   recycled waste from pine branches.

who will ask in the near future   where products originate,

These questions will be asked,   so we should tackle things now.

that is the watchword   of greens in Europe.

Animals can also contribute   to saving the planet.

In this town in Sicily,   waste collection trucks don’t exist.

Instead they have mules   that the binmen use to collect the bins.

Back to the departure point of this   European tour of green initiatives.

Why not borrow two wheels standing   not sitting to get to Copenhagen?

Final stop of this European tour, a nod to   the former Beatle Paul McCartney.

What we need to do   is give people an answer.

So I'm suggesting one day meat-free   could cut individuals' emissions

by the equivalent of a 1,000 mile car trip.

Are animals also to blame for global warming?

Luckily some people use excrement and   other gases emitted by cows for example,

as well other organic matter   to create electricity and heat.

It’s called biomethanation,   a possible solution to all our problems.
