SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, EP Presidente, Today we are here in Strasbourg to mark 82 years since the first mass deportations from the Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to the Soviet Union. In five days, the Soviet secret police deported at least 205,000 people women and men, children and infants.They forcibly moved the sick, the dying, the elderly. Families were ripped apart. People forever scarred. 82 years later, we are here to commemorate, to remember the suffering endured by those not only in the Baltics, but by many others across Europe as a whole. Whilst we cannot change the past, we can learn from it so that when we say never again, we will know what is at stake. So today we honour as a European Parliament the memory of the victims. Thank you.
