Award of the 2016 LUX Prize: interview of the laureate Maren ADE, director of "Toni Erdmann"

SOUNDBITE (English), Maren ADE, Director of &apos;Tony Erdmann&apos;, It's a very big honour for all of us to receive that award but it's special with the LUX Prize because it was already like an award when we heard that we were nominated, because it meant that the film was subtitled for 24 countries and that's the biggest present that you can make to a filmmaker, that your film is going out to the world. So, we were already happy then and now it's even a bigger honour.

SOUNDBITE (English), Maren ADE, Director of &apos;Tony Erdmann&apos;, It's hard to explain for myself why it works for so many different nations. I was surprised because I thought also family relationships or relations in general are different in every culture but I don't know, I have the felling and that was also something that I was searching for, while doing the film, that it has like an universal heart... and I think this is the father and the daughter fighting to come closer to each other.

SOUNDBITE (English), Maren ADE, Director of &apos;Tony Erdmann&apos;, For me it's really important to leave some space for the viewer in a film to have his own thoughts. I always have this picture in mind that the viewer should be able to like go for his own walk in my film. And this needed some time.

SOUNDBITE (English), Maren ADE, Director of &apos;Tony Erdmann&apos;, I made a long casting and it was difficult because I had to cast three people, I had to find Winfried and Toni, so every Winfried would have meant another Toni and so we tried out a lot, we had lot of wigs and teethflying around andPeter Simonischekwas really perfect as this Toni. Sandra, she is an incredible actress and I like very much how she could play on one side that very strong facade of a very determined consultant, and on the other side you could always see through to her emotions.
