MEPs discuss Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel, the need for de-escalation and for an EU response and vote on a resolution on Thursday. EP President Roberta Metsola described Iran’s direct drone and missile attack on Israel on 20 and 21 April as a major escalation in the region and warned it risks igniting further chaos across the Middle East. Amidst significant geopolitical uncertainty and threats, MEPs are set to call for decisive action to strengthen and protect the international rules-based order. EP Plenary holds a joint debate on how to strengthen European security and defence with the Council and Commission. In the draft report on the implementation of the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy for 2023, MEPs urge the EU to develop robust strategic alliances, to accelerate EU enlargement and reform decision-making processes in response to a new geopolitical context. Parliament also assesses the implementation of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy report in the context of a rapidly deteriorating global security environment. Both reports will be put to a vote on Wednesday.

Arrested by the morality police on 13 September 2022 for allegedly ignoring Iran’s strict veiling laws, Jina Mahsa Amini died in a Tehran hospital three days later following physical abuse while in custody. Her death sparked protests that spread around the country with at least 500 people killed after the Iranian authorities clamped down on the demonstrations with brutal force. MEPs discuss the situation in Iran and mark Amini’s death that sparked months of mass protests in the county.

MEPs are set to adopt recommendations to tackle and prevent spyware abuse in Europe, based on the inquiry into illicit use of Pegasus and other spyware. The recommendations set out a range of proposals, including investigations into suspected abuse; EU standards for the deploy of spyware; legal remedies for people who have been targeted; strict enforcement of the EU’s export control rules; an EU Tech Lab to conduct technical investigations; and co-ordination with third countries. Pegasus spyware: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on the European Commission's proposal to help European industry increase its ammunition and missile production capacity. Under the Commission’s proposal, the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP) will have a budget of €500 million in current prices. The Commission is encouraging the co-legislators to adopt the proposal by the end of June.

New rules on political advertising. MEPs deabte and vote on new political advertising rules to make EU elections more transparent and resistant to interference. The draft text demands that more information be made available to citizens, authorities and journalists, banning online advert providers from carrying out micro-targeting, and introducing additional sanctions for breaches.
