MEPs debate on EU Defence Readiness. A draft resolution says that, due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, military mobility has become an essential enabler for common European security and defence. It is also now crucial for the security of the EU’s eastern flank, in particular the Baltic countries and Poland. Given the movement of military equipment across the EU can be a protracted effort, MEPs suggest removing existing administrative and financial barriers, as well as infrastructure obstacles to create a ‘military Schengen’.

Joint debate - EU Defence Readiness: MEPs debate (part 1)

MEPs debate on a continued financial and military support to Ukraine by EU Member States. MEPs are calling for continued military and financial support for Ukraine in a resolution expected on Thursday. Ahead of the vote, Parliament is holding a debate with the Commission. In July, the newly-elected Parliament adopted its first resolution of the term, stating that the EU must support Ukraine until it wins against Russia’s occupying forces. This latest resolution reaffirms that commitment, urging EU countries to maintain their backing for Kyiv.

Continued financial and military support to Ukraine by EU Member States: MEPs debate (part 1)

MEPs are set to adopt recommendations to tackle and prevent spyware abuse in Europe, based on the inquiry into illicit use of Pegasus and other spyware. The recommendations set out a range of proposals, including investigations into suspected abuse; EU standards for the deploy of spyware; legal remedies for people who have been targeted; strict enforcement of the EU’s export control rules; an EU Tech Lab to conduct technical investigations; and co-ordination with third countries. Dozens of persons were killed on 24 June in clashes with the Moroccan security forces at the border between Spain and Morocco, following an attempt to cross the fence into the Spanish enclave of Melilla. In the plenary debate, MEPs demand member states ensure humane treatment of all persons seeking international protection at their borders and are set to reiterate their calls for legal channels to enter the EU.

Although EU-Turkey relations have improved slightly recently, MEPs are worried about the continued deterioration of fundamental rights and rule of law in the country. MEPs are also expected to welcome Turkey’s willingness to act as a mediator in the Russian war against Ukraine and to stress that it is vitally important that the EU and Turkey cooperate well on foreign and security policy. MEPs raise the issue of Turkey’s president being opposed to Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO.
