Vote on the Right to repair: statement by Anna CAVAZZINI (Greens/EFA,DE), rapporteur

SOUNDBITE (English), Anna CAVAZZINI (Greens/EFA, DE), Rapporteur, I think every one of us knows it, a mobile phone, a washing machine breaks and then it's very, very hard to repair because something is glued or you don't find the spare parts. And we in the European Parliament want that every citizen has the right to repair its devices, its machines and so on. Meaning products have to live longer by design. Citizens have to have access to spare parts in an affordable manner, but also in not too much time that we need a legislation that forbids planned obsolescence because a lot of products they break really by design after two years or so. And we also need to adapt basically the warranty time for a longer lifespan of products.

SOUNDBITE (English), Anna CAVAZZINI (Greens/EFA, DE), Rapporteur,  I think it is important to notice that the right to repair is not one single piece of legislation. I think we need to really look at different parts of the right to repair, for example, and the sustainable product initiative that would come already in March. Hopefully will include like a really sustainability by design and repairability by design for all products on the EU single market. We also, for example, need to look at the EU Sales for Goods Directive. Now, it is not the default option that if a product breaks that you get a repaired product, but you get a new product, you get a product replaced. And I think there, for example, also means that the product, the repairing the product is the default option. I think it's also really important that the commission comes up with a proposal that access to spare parts and better information for consumers, for example, was a kind of product passport or repairs form is included in the proposal.
