It will not be the last one. The Lisbon Treaty has strengthened both the role of the European Parliament and the role of national parliaments, and that makes perfect sense. A more assertive and cohesive Europe must be increasingly democratic, attentive to the voice of their citizens and the Parliaments that represent them.

I met a group of women and children in Strasbourg who had just made it out of Kiev. I asked them, "where are you going?". They told me Porto, a place on the other side of the continent. It was an emotional moment, but it showed that even in the worst of times, you did not shy away from responsibility. Your mayors did not say they were too far away to care. You stood up and gave people hope.

Your voice, your choice matters. Your vote matters. Because Europe is not about its institutions. Europe is its people. And of course, I am not here to say that the European Union is perfect. Indeed, I am one to share many of the frustrations with some of our processes. But I'm here to say that Europe can be better, if we act together.
