SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, EP President, Good afternoon, dear Irina Yefremova, deputy head of Mission of Ukraine to the European Union. Dear colleagues and friends, thank you all for being here today to pay tribute to the brave Ukrainian men and women who, despite the horrors of war, the constant Russian bombardments and shelling continue to risk their lives to provide emergency rescue and medical assistance to the wounded, the sick and the traumatised.

SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, EP President, Just next to us, we have a war damaged ambulance from the Karkhiv region that stands testimony to the courage of the Ukrainian people in the midst of an inhuman war bearing the scars of a Russian cluster. Bombs fragments from March 2022, it has been given the name of Barvinoch, the periwinkle flower, a symbol of eternal life, of the unrelenting and undefeated Ukrainians, a nation of everyday heroes.

SOUNDBITE (English), Roberta METSOLA, EP President, My hope is that the ambulance will serve as a reminder that even in death, there is hope. A future, the future of real peace, democracy and stability of a strong Ukrainian nation that will never give up. Together, we will help rebuild Ukraine as a future member of the European Union. And we can say this, especially today.

Today is a special day, as President Mitchell mentioned, today's a special day for Ukraine and for the European Union. The European Commission releases enlargement report 2023. It's exactly ten days, ten years ago as Maidan in Ukraine started. We are sure that our future is with you, European family. We are grateful for the European Union and its Member States for the strong support provided to our state active mobilisation and allocation of human of comprehensive humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

SOUNDBITE (English), Iryna YEFREMOVA, Deputy Head of the Ukrainian Mission to the European Union, As a result of constant shelling of the territory of Ukraine and massive missile attacks. The numbers of wounded military personnel and civilians are increasing every day. Hospitals in Ukraine at the limit of their capabilities, carry out an important mission in providing emergency medical care and treatment of injured persons who survive suffered as a result of aggression. To provide assistance and save lives, emergency medical aid teams in border and front lines regions of Ukraine have special needs in armoured sanitary vehicles and means of individual physical protection. I hope that events like this will help us to draw attention to the special needs of medical services as their work is crucial nowadays.
