In September 2023 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asked Mario Draghi to prepare a report on the future of European competitiveness. The report was completed in September 2024. It looks at the challenges faced by industry and companies and outlines how Europe will no longer be able to rely on many of the factors that have supported growth in the past. MEPs debate on Air Passenger Rights. They discuss the Council’s proposed changes to existing air passenger rights rules. Parliament’s draft text offers a comprehensive list of extraordinary circumstances, such as natural disasters, weather conditions or unforeseen labour disputes, that would release airlines of their responsibility to pay compensation. Council favours an open-ended list. Plenary also defends the right to carry on board, at no additional cost, one personal item, such as a handbag, backpack or laptop, plus one small piece of hand luggage with maximum dimensions of 100 cm (combined length, width and height) and weighing no more than 7 kg.

MEPs focus on Europe’s ongoing efforts to secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, relations with the US and the EU’s strategic autonomy. MEPs debate on EU Defence Readiness. A draft resolution says that, due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, military mobility has become an essential enabler for common European security and defence. It is also now crucial for the security of the EU’s eastern flank, in particular the Baltic countries and Poland. Given the movement of military equipment across the EU can be a protracted effort, MEPs suggest removing existing administrative and financial barriers, as well as infrastructure obstacles to create a ‘military Schengen’.

MEPs debate on phasing out Russian natural gas imports. This legislative proposal comes in response to Russia’s systematic weaponisation of energy supplies, a pattern documented over nearly two decades and escalating with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The 2022 invasion came with further deliberate market manipulation, including Gazprom’s unprecedented underfilling of EU storage facilities and abrupt halts to pipelines, causing energy prices to spike to up to eight times their pre-crisis levels.

Phasing out Russian natural gas imports, improving monitoring of potential energy dependencies and amending Regulation: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on EU response to the continuous airspace violations and sabotage of critical infrastructure in the EU originating from Russia and Belarus. The debate comes after Lithuania shut its border crossings with Belarus at the end of October 2025 after authorities detected smuggling balloons drifting from Belarus into Lithuanian airspace. The balloons, officials say, posed a threat to civil aviation and are part of a continuous hybrid operation orchestrated by dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s Belarusian government. The plenary debate with the Commission is also expected to refer to a recent explosion on a railway line in Poland, which Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk referred to as “an unprecedented act of sabotage”.
