This video shows MEPs, the Council and the Commission debating the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its current and futur implications on energy prices as well as on the availability of fertilizers for our agricultural needs, and how to respond to it. This legislative proposal comes in response to Russia’s systematic weaponisation of energy supplies, a pattern documented over nearly two decades and escalating with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The 2022 invasion came with further deliberate market manipulation, including Gazprom’s unprecedented underfilling of EU storage facilities and abrupt halts to pipelines, causing energy prices to spike to up to eight times their pre-crisis levels.

MEPs debate on the communication on the Democracy Shield. The new rules seek to increase transparency and public trust in policy and decision-making without being unduly burdensome or restricting legitimate civic engagement. The draft directive addresses the increasingly cross-border nature of lobbying and potential foreign influence in European democratic processes. MEPs debate with the Commission and the Danish Council Presidency the details of the trade agreement with the US, and possible deals with other countries. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump announced a deal on tariffs and trade on 27 July, but questions about its implementation details remain. The prospect of further deals with other trade partners will also be discussed. MEPs are likely to raise the agreement concluded with Mercosur, whose ratification is pending, and the agreed update of the agreement with Mexico, among others.

Implementation of EU-US trade deal and the prospect of wider EU trade agreements: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on security guarantees and a just peace for Ukraine, as well as the country’s path towards EU membership. During the debate on EU action to ensure security guarantees for Ukraine, speakers take stock of the outcome of US President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska during the summer, and the continued Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities following the summit. MEPs also discuss a report prepared by Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, which encourages the Ukrainian government to keep up the momentum on implementing reforms along the path towards EU membership. The draft resolution, also commends Ukraine for its extraordinary efforts in strengthening its democratic institutions at an extremely difficult time, with Russia’s war of aggression raging on. Joint debate - EU action to ensure security guarantees and just peace for Ukraine: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs assess the latest developments in EU-US trade relations with Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Danish Minister Marie Bjerre for the Council during the plenary session in Strasbourg. Council and Commission are seeking a negotiated solution with the US to restore stability and predictability in transatlantic trade relations, but has also prepared for potential countermeasures if no agreement is reached. They are also pursuing trade diversification by negotiating new agreements with other partners like Mercosur, Mexico, and others. Second part of MEPs debate.

Council and Commission statements - EU-US trade negotiations: MEPs debate part 2

MEPs lay out their expectations for the upcoming North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in The Hague on 24-26 June, in a debate with the Commission. At their gathering in The Netherlands, leaders from NATO countries are expected to discuss how to ramp up defence spending in the context of Russia’s continued war of aggression against Ukraine and calls from US President Donald Trump for European countries to invest more and take a greater responsibility for their defence.
