On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, a United Nations resolution designated 27 January the day for international commemoration of the Holocaust, to be known as 'International Holocaust Remembrance Day'.  It remembers the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazi regime and its collaborators against the Jew communities in Europe. 
 
Since 1995, the European Parliament has adopted resolutions, drawing attention to the obligation to remember not only through commemorations but also through education. The European Parliament also hosts yearly a solemn ceremony to mark the day during a Plenary session. 

At this year’s ceremony, members of the chamber hear from Tatiana Bucci, who has been invited to speak about her experience. Tatiana and her sister Andra were among the youngest known child survivors of Auschwitz who retain personal memories of the camp, having been just six and four years old when they were arrested by the Nazis. Upon arrival at Auschwitz, they were mistakenly identified as twins on the Judenrampe. After being tattooed — Tatiana with number 76484 and Andra with 76483 — their mother, Mira, urged them to memorise each other’s names, a promise they believe played a crucial role in helping them reunite with their parents after the war.
