SOUNDBITE (English), Bas EICKHOUT (Greens/EFA, NL), This cop is really totally different from Glasgow. There was a lot of last year, right? So there was a lot of attention to this summit. There was a lot of emphasis on increasing ambition. And what we see now here in Sharm el Sheikh and it's an African cop. I think there is more attention for the impacts of climate change. What are we going to do to adapt ourselves to that, to also pay for the loss and damage of climate change impacts? So the biggest challenge is this climate summit is still the lack of ambition. We're still not doing enough what we promised in the Paris Agreement. So we still need to increase our ambition. But at the same time, much more on the agenda for this week is also climate change impacts and how do we deal with adaptation and loss and damage.

SOUNDBITE (English), Bas EICKHOUT (Greens/EFA, NL), And those issues together still need to be solved this week. What is amazing is that that's what we have seen, of course, with the current energy crisis is that we are far too dependent on fossil fuels. I mean, we can, of course, replace Russian imports by other imports, but I think our biggest reply should be that we really need more energy created in our own continent and that the cheapest option will be renewable energy. So it is true that the first responses are now, of course, kind of we need to replace fossils by fossils. So Russian fossils by other fossils. That's a kind of the the easy way out. But I think too many governments are taking that step. What really needs to change is that we need to think more forwards and looking at the climate crisis and the current energy crisis together

SOUNDBITE (English), Bas EICKHOUT (Greens/EFA, NL), And we can tackle that together and be by making ourselves less dependent of fossil fuels, which is also causing this huge increase in prices. It's not inflation. It's fossil formation. And I think so you can tackle it hand in hand. But it's absolutely true that the Europe, when they are making funds available, really should be more guiding the member states in the direction of future investments in renewables and of course, efficiency.

SOUNDBITE (Greek), Petros KOKKALIS (The Left, EL), My hopes are no less than the hopes of the cynic, the secretary general of the United Nations, that we must cooperate or perish. So my expectations for this cup are extremely high, not so much on the ambition side to keep up the ambition set up in Glasgow, but on the climate justice and also on the recognition of the debt of the global north to the global south to assist in those who are least responsible and least able to adapt, least able to respond, least able to protect themselves, to assist in their burden. And their burden is mostly fiscal. So my highest expectation for this group is to see progress on debt support climate.
