Opening remarks by Martin SCHULZ, EP President on terrorist attacks in Istanbul and Ouagadougou

<p>SOUNDBITE (in German), Martin SCHULZ, EP President:</p>  <p>There were brutal attacks in Tunisia, in Jakarta, in Paris and elsewhere and then on the 12th of January in the heart of Istanbul there was a terrible attack against citizens and citizens were the victims of these, 10 German citizens perished and 9 were seriously injured in Ouagadougou, more than 2 dozen people died, there were originated from 7 countries.  50 people were also injured in this terrible attack. Our thoughts go out to the families and to the friends of all those concerned and we hope that those who are injured do recover quickly, but I'm afraid we have to live with the fact that terror respects no boundaries and borders, we must reiterate our commitments to freedom, because that is under threat in Turkey, in Burkina Faso and throughout the European Union. So Ladies and Gentlemen we must acknowledge that terrorism is a daily threat, but we mustn't be intimidated by these cynical perpetrators of these attacks. Rather we must work together to tackle terrorism and we must do so on the basis of our democratic values.</p>
