MEPs debate the US-Israel military operation against Iran, its consequences and the need to support Iranians, as well as expectations for the 19-20 March EU summit. As the United States and Israeli air strikes in Iran are ongoing, and Iran continues to respond with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and other countries in the region with links to the US, MEPs discuss the latest developments. MEPs also outline their demands for the upcoming EU summit. They build on the sense of urgency expressed at the informal competitiveness retreat of EU leaders on 12 February 2026, where Commission President Ursula von der Leyen committed to a “One Europe, one market” roadmap aimed at completing the single market and strengthening Europe’s competitiveness. MEPs also discuss the role of the EU’s next long-term budget (the 2028–2034 multiannual financial framework) as a driver of competitiveness, alongside European defence and security priorities.

EUCO and situation in the Middle East: MEPs debate (part 3)

MEPs set out their recommendations to promote decent, sustainable, and affordable housing across the European Union in a debate with Council and Commission representatives. They highlight the precarious living conditions of millions of Europeans, due to a limited housing supply and increasing rent and mortgage costs in the past two decades. The draft proposals cover the key aspects of the crisis, including the need to boost investment through EU, national and private funds, to reduce red tape in the housing sector, improve the quality, sustainability and habitability of homes, and to tackle labour shortages and competitiveness challenges in the construction sector.

MEPs debate the urgent actions required to boost EU competitiveness, deepen the single market, and reduce the cost of living. MEPs outline their priorities for transforming the recommendations in the 2024 Draghi report into reality. They also assess the work already undertaken on the recommendations. In September 2023 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asked Mario Draghi to prepare a report on the future of European competitiveness. The report was completed in September 2024. It looks at the challenges faced by industry and companies and outlines how Europe will no longer be able to rely on many of the factors that have supported growth in the past. It lays out a diagnosis and provides recommendations to put Europe on a different trajectory. Third part of MEPs debate.

Urgent actions to revive EU competitiveness, deepen the EU Single Market and reduce the cost of living - from the Draghi report to reality: MEPs debate (part 3)

MEPs debate on building a stronger European defence in light of an increasingly volatile international environment. At the 2025 NATO Summit, allies committed to raising defence and security spending to 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035, more than doubling the previous 2% target. With that in mind, plus Russia’s continuing full-scale war on Ukraine, and ongoing tensions in relations between Europe and the US, the plenary debate focus on current efforts to boost European defence. This includes strengthening military deterrence, supporting Ukraine and reinforcing Europe’s industrial capacity in the defence field.

Building a stronger European defence in light of an increasingly volatile international environment: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on European Council meeting (18 December 2025). At their meeting in Brussels, European leaders reinforced the EU’s solidarity with Ukraine and agreed to provide a €90 billion loan for 2026-2027 based on EU borrowing, while deferring the use of frozen Russian assets for reparations. On the Middle East, they reiterated the EU’s commitment to a just and lasting peace based on a two-state solution. On defence and security, the European Council strongly condemned recent hybrid attacks against EU member states and reviewed progress on boosting EU defence readiness. Leaders also discussed the geoeconomic situation and its implications for the EU’s competitiveness, addressed the 2028-2034 EU long-term budget, and reaffirmed that enlargement remains a key geostrategic priority.

Joint debate - European Council meeting (18 December 2025): MEPs debate (part 1)

Commissioner Jørgensen and MEPs discuss how to ensure access to affordable housing across the EU. The Commission’s Affordable Housing Plan is expected to include a dedicated construction strategy and streamlined administrative procedures to accelerate the renovation of existing households. MEPs focus on the shortage of skilled workers in the construction sector, a possible revision of state aid rules to incentivise construction, and cooperation with the private sector. The importance of renovation and rehabilitation in both urban and rural areas is also likely to be raised during the debate. First part of MEPs debate.

Presentation of the European Affordable Housing Plan: MEPs debate (part 1)

MEPs discuss the next steps in implementing the Migration and Asylum Pact, with Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus BRUNNER and Danish Minister BJERRE. Yesterday, the Commission tabled its first annual asylum and migration report, accompanied by a decision determining which Member States are under “migratory pressure" and therefore eligible to access the solidarity pool when the Migration Pact enters into application in mid-2026 pool. MEPs debate on the recent allegations that the Hungarian government has been spying on the EU institutions. On 9 October, several media outlets published allegations that the Hungarian secret services, posing as diplomats at the Hungarian Permanent Representation to the EU, attempted to recruit EU officials as informants in Brussels. The Commission has said it will set up an internal group to investigate the allegations. In a plenary debate on Wednesday afternoon, MEPs will discuss the allegations with Commission and Council representatives.
