The European Parliament supports human rights through the annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, established in 1988.

The prize is awarded to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the fight for human rights across the globe, drawing attention to human rights violations as well as supporting the laureates and their cause.

The winner is announced in October, and the award ceremony takes place in November/December at the plenary sitting in Strasbourg.

Oleg Sentsov is the 2018 laureate of Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

Highlights of the European Youth Event 2021 (EYE 2021) which takes place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. EYE2021 is the culmination of the European Parliament’s youth consultation process for the Conference on the Future of Europe. Starting in May 2021, in collaboration with pan-European youth organisations, young people’s ideas on the future of Europe will be collected on the youthideas.eu platform. EYE2021 participants will explore these ideas in ideation workshops during the event. After a public voting process during EYE2021, the ideas will be consolidated into a report, presented to the Members of the Conference and fed into the political debate of the Conference.
