The EU energy label is key to boosting the energy efficiency of everyday electric appliances like lighting, heating, fridges, freezers, televisions and many more products. A rescaled energy label will be introduced gradually from 1 March 2021 to have a simpler classification using only letters from A to G. The first set of new energy labels will include fridges, dishwashers, washing machines and televisions. In Strasbourg, high definition television, is presented to Members. It's a first experience of television with a cinema style screen (16:9) and cinema type quality of picture. The technology behind the new system has been developed as a European community initiative. At stake is the worldwide market for this next stage in television development, with only the Japanese offering a viable alternative. The system on display is the product of four years of research from the community, Eureka HDTV project. It uses digital technology and direct broadcast by satellite and will allow multilingual soundtrack's.
