The European Commission proposes new measures for a high level of public sector interoperability across the Union (the interoperable Europe act). At least 80 % of European citizens should have the possibility to use a digital identity to access key public services by 2030 and to do so across EU borders. The updated European digital identity framework would also allow citizens to identify and authenticate themselves online (via their European digital identity wallet) without having to resort to commercial providers, a practice that raises trust, security and privacy concerns.

European leaders agreed on a €50&nbsp;billion Ukraine aid package.&nbsp;The 27 European Union Member States unanimously agreed to commit 17 billion euros in grants and 33 billion euros in loans to help Ukraine for the next four years.

Leaders met on a&nbsp;special European Council&nbsp;in Brussels on 1 February 2024. The decision had been postponed from last European Council meeting on December because of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's opposition.

The aid package is set to be included in a revised EU budget, which means that it required&nbsp;unanimous approval from the 27 leaders.

Europe’s Jewish population has been diminishing in recent decades, and a growing number of anti-Semitic acts and anti-Jewish violence have been occurring in recent years in the EU. In defence of its values, including respect for minorities, the EU undertakes and funds actions to counter anti-Semitism.

During December&nbsp;summit&nbsp;&nbsp;EU leaders adopted conclusions on&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;and&nbsp;enlargement. They decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, and to grant candidate status to Georgia.

They also decided to open accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina once it has met the necessary membership criteria.&nbsp;

The leaders also held an in-depth discussion on the&nbsp;mid-term review&nbsp;of the EU’s long-term budget for 2021–2027. They&nbsp;also discussed security&nbsp;and&nbsp;defence, the&nbsp;Middle East,&nbsp;migration&nbsp;and other items.

Parliament set out its vision for the future of Europe in three resolutions voted in plenary session on 16 February 2017. MEPs suggested, among other things:

<ul>
	<li>turning the Council of Ministers into a genuine second legislative chamber, and its configurations into preparatory bodies similar to Parliament’s committees,</li>
	<li>appointing an EU finance minister and giving the EU Commission the power to formulate and give effect to a common EU economic policy, backed up by a euro-area budget, and</li>
	<li>creating a fiscal capacity consisting of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) and specific additional budgetary capacity for the euro area, funded by its members as a part of the EU budget.</li>
</ul>

Future of Europe - 8th parliamentary term

The spring European Council will focus on economic affairs. Heads of state or government will also look at a number of the other pressing issues, including taxation and foreign affairs. Finally, EU leaders will also discuss Brexit (in an EU 27 format) and eurozone (Euro Summit format).

 
EU leaders will adopt conclusions on several issues relevant for jobs, growth and competitiveness. Heads of state or government are also expected to address trade issues. EU leaders will hold a debate on taxation, in particular in the digital economy. The European Council will be invited to adopt conclusions on Western Balkans, ahead of the May summit in Sofia. In the light of events, the heads of state or government may address specific foreign policy issues. The Bulgarian Prime Minister, who represents the state currently holding the rotating presidency, will brief other leaders on the implementation of earlier European Council conclusions, including ongoing work on the reform of the Common European Asylum System.The European Council (Art. 50), in an EU 27 format, will review the state of the negotiations following the United Kingdom's notification of its intention to leave the EU and adopt additional guidelines.

From childhood to retirement, social policies are important at all stages of our lives.

Compared to the rest of the world, Europe has the best levels of social protection and also ranks highly in terms of quality of life and wellbeing. However, it faces a wide range of challenges.

The effects of the economic crisis are still deeply felt in many member states and, even though things have improved in many countries, great disparities remain within the EU. Unemployment rates are decreasing overall, but vary strongly among EU countries.

Low birth rates and an aging population also challenge the sustainability of welfare systems. Working life is being transformed due by technological innovation, globalisation and the rise of the services sector. New business models in the sharing economy with more flexible forms of working are becoming more important.

Social Europe (2020)

Alexis TSÍPRAS, Greek Prime Minister, visited the European Parliament (EP) in Strabourg on 8 July 2015. He participated at the debate on the conclusions of the European Council (25 - 26 June 2015) and the euro summit on 7 July including the current situation in Greece.

Greece and the best way to resolve the ongoing crisis were hotly debated in plenary on 8 July in the presence of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. While some MEPs criticised him for his lack of concrete proposals, others praised him while some urged him to take his country out of the eurozone. The debate also took into account the conclusions of the recent European Council on 25-26 June and the euro summit on 7 July.

The last EuroLat meeting&nbsp;of the Standing Parliamentary Committees took place at the European Parliament's premises in Brussels (Belgium) from 30 November - 2 December 2022.

The 150 EuroLat members met in times of a rapidly changing geopolitical context and at a crucial time for the relaunch of EU-Latin America relations, right after the EU- CELAC ministerial meeting in Argentina and the adoption of the EU "Road Map 2023".

The Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat) is a multilateral parliamentary assembly - a forum for several different parliaments to come together - composed of 150 members. EuroLat is the parliamentary institution of 'the European Union - Latin American and Caribbean Bi-regional Strategic Partnership. The Assembly is composed by 150 Members; Half of the members - 75 - are members of the European Parliament and the other half - 75 - comes from the Latin American regional parliaments.

The Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly - EuroLat was created in 2006. Its Constituent Session took place on 8 and 9 October in Brussels.

On 13 November, 23 Member States notified their intention to join PESCO to enhance defence cooperation.They will also review progress in other fields, notably on EU-NATO cooperation. Under the Leaders' Agenda, leaders will hold a debate on the way forward on migration policy, including both the internal and external dimensions. "In the European Union, democracy may seem obvious to us today. But this has not always been the case. Not so long ago, millions of Europeans lived through times when they could not vote or even speak up freely. When their very lives could be in danger simply for being different, for holding different beliefs or for wanting a different life. Democracy is a precious gift passed on to us from previous generations. They aspired towards it and fought for it. Now it is up to us to maintain it, to make it stronger and pass it on to the generations to come. The most effective way to do so is by voting - because the more people vote, the stronger democracy becomes. On June 6-9 2024: Use your vote or others will decide for you.
