European Parliamentary Week - A European New Deal: stimulating public and private investment for growth and jobs in Europe

SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, We want that the EU will become this promise again by achieving its objectives of a high level of employment and social protection. We should pay as much attention to employment an social indicators, as we do to budgetary an macroeconomic indicators.

SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, The Investment Plant is a strong signal that we are committed to new path for Europe towards growth and jobs. Now we are all called upon to assume our responsibilities to make sure that we give to the Investment Plant the best possible chances to succeed.

SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, The key will be to regain investor's confidence. To regain the confidence that Europe is a place worth investing in. Let's say it is the advantage of our collective strength because together we are stronger.

SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP President, Without a doubt all the countries need to put money on the table, including the most effective ones. This is why we welcome the neutralisation of national contributions for the European fund for strategic investments.

SOUNDBITE (French), Pierre MOSCOVICI, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs , Our goal is that European public money is used appropriately by using  our inner  means of financing. We welcome the EIB investment's expertise. The EU will produce a guarantee of &euro;16bn wich come from reallocation of the current budget, plus the &euro;5bn provided for the EIB. That is basically the heart of the European fund strategic investments that &euro;21bn. It is important for you to know, as member of the Parliament, that there will not be any negative impact on the European budget or on any of its components.

SOUNDBITE (French), Pierre MOSCOVICI, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs , The final part relates to measures to improve legal securities and lift barriers to investments, to make Europe more competitive and increase the impact of the Plan. That means, that a key complementary area to the Plan are structural reforms in the internal market. We have to continue with the structural reforms, there is still a lot of work to be done there. The internal market needs to be improve as well, particularly, in the service sector, in the infrastructure sector, and the digital  sector. These are three priorities for the European Commission.

SOUNDBITE (French), Pierre MOSCOVICI, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs , We urgently need the legal basis so we can create the Fund. We count on the support of the Latvian Presidency, as I said in Riga already. We are also counting on the EP. We need to see good will on all sides, we need to see progress. This fund needs to be operational by September, that is what we want.

SOUNDBITE (English), Wilhelm MOLTERER, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) , These days, ladies and gentleman, liquidity is not the bottleneck. The market is liquid, the companies are catch rich. The key issue therefore is how to overcome the macroeconomic uncertainties, how to overcome the fragmentation of the internal market, how to overcome obstacles on the regulatory side, and on the other hand, to attract the private investors to support this strategy,  wired this new instrument. It is a new instrument, it is a new approach what we are going for. This European fund for strategic investment is an innovation as such, it is as I said, a real fantastic symbol of how European institutions work together to the best, and best interest of the Europeans, of the citizens of Europe. We need all our effort to boost growth and to increase our employment.
