Over 1 billion people in some 100 countries face risks related to desertification and half of EU countries are impacted. Every minute, 23 hectares of land is lost, more than the average size of EU farms. Climate change can make it worse, as does human activity. This land degradation process affects both food production and biodiversity. Today, measuring and monitoring pose great challenges. In the European Union, data exist but there is no EU common approach as yet. In the future, the new European Green Deal and the ‘From Farm to Fork’ strategy will contribute to protecting our land.
