World Day against the Death Penalty: statement by David SASSOLI, EP President

SOUNDBITE (Italian), David SASSOLI, EP President, I would like to remind you that today is the World Day Against the Death Penalty. In a world where values and human rights seem to have become not absolute, the death penalty is an affront to human dignity and cannot be tolerated in any case. This year  we pay particular tribute to those children whose parents have been sentenced to death. I am persuaded that the State-imposed death could never be seen as a form of true justice. It is also important to consider the trauma inflicted on these children. Our Parliament is committed and determined more than ever to defend human dignity, as laid down in our Treaties. We will do everything we can to reach the day in which every country will ban the death penalty. It is a duty that we owe to future generations and to ourselves. I am sure that this is a feeling shared by all this Parliament. Thank you.
