Behind hacker attacks, very often there are foreign countries that try to influence critical infrastructures, not just politics. For years, the European Union has been working on cyber security: first with NIS2, the Cyber Security Act and now with NIS2, and the Cyber Resilience Act. The cost we are paying today because of cybercrime is enormous: 5,500 billion euros in 2021, what the community must pay to ensure security. This is why this act is an important act that will strengthen the European safety of products and therefore of citizens.

These ports, we have decided, must make them increasingly secure and for this reason we have put in place this legislation that serves to ensure that there are important security standards for all products that are connected. From our mobile phone, which is the easiest thing to understand but also, for example, to all the tools that are increasingly connected today, for example, home appliances or other essential elements. Software is another very important chapter. With this act, what do we say we should? We give the responsibility to manufacturers over the period of time it will take to adapt the production systems that must guarantee a certification that their products have all the characteristics to be resilient.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Nicola DANTI (Renew, IT), Rapporteur, Manufacturers must guarantee at the beginning, when placing a product on the market, the lifespan of this product. And with respect to the duration of the product, a support period in which the software will be updated and therefore security will be guaranteed. How long will this time be? Each product is different. It is clear that the life of a mobile phone is of a certain time, the life of an industrial machine is many more years, so it is clear that there is no specific period. It will be the manufacturers, when they place it on the market, will say that that product has this probable lifespan and this guarantee of support and software updates.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Nicola DANTI (Renew, IT), Rapporteur, We hope that the Council, which is currently taking the general approach to this legislation, will be available immediately from September for the trilogues and start negotiating. I believe that we will work intensively in the months of September, October and November and we hope that in December we can reach an agreement and deliver this legislation, which will take a long time to implement. We made sure that it was ambitious legislation, but at the same time that the production system had time to adapt the standards we proposed. Not only that, but also to train the right people to ensure safety. We hope that by December we will finish the work with the advice that Parliament will approve in the first months of next year and that it will enter into force as soon as possible.
