Exchange of views with the parents of Giulio REGENI, young Italian killed in Egypt: extracts from the meeting at the Subcommittee on Human Rights in association with the Delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries

We as parents are knocking on every door, we want to know the truth and to have justice for Giulio. Giulio, on the basis of his origin as European citizen should have the right of quality justice from the institutions.

I can say that we are having an encyclopaedia of the torture. I'm a mother, and saying this it is really hard, but we are having the Egypt torture encyclopaedia.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Paola REGENI, mother of the young Italian killed in Egypt, Egypt doesn't collaborate with Italy. Giulio was a European citizen. We are here for this reason that Egypt is not working with the Europeans and therefore we call for strong pressure to be put from Europe on Egypt.

You know better than I do, that in Egypt, they trust us, and they trust Giulio, because Giulio's case can help other people, he can open a way forward, and perhaps that is the true commemoration that we can make for our son.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Claudio REGENI, father of the young Italian killed in Egypt, Our request to the European Union is : 1 - to recall member states ambassadors. ; 2 - to declare Egypt an unsafe country; 3- to suspend agreements and readmissions; 4 to suspend into force agreements; 5 - to suspend agreements to send arms or espionage equipment or other war material or equipment of repression, as has been described; 6 - to suspend economic agreements and not conclude any news ones; 7 - monitor the trials of doctors, layers, activist, people as Ibrahim Halawa, citizens of Ireland, and still in prison today; or Ahmad Abdallah from the association for Freedom in Egypt.

People from the secret police are better in letting people disappear, if I understand it correctly. No one has excluded the possibility that there might be a subgroup of the secret services that might have carried out this killing. I'm wondering if you are having any information on this.

SOUNDBITE (English), Ana GOMES (S&amp;D, PT), It was because of the death of the European Giulio Regeni, that certainly a lot of people in Europe had waken up to the human rights situation in Egypt, in the Egypt of Sisi.

SOUNDBITE (English), Ana GOMES (S&amp;D, PT), On the other hand, this is indeed a state crime. It's also very clear for everybody, and the difficulties in having the investigations come clean with what indeed happened and who's responsible it is in itself a demonstration that this is a state crime, that there is state cover up, that there were state agents that were involved. Yes, this comes in a situation where security is dramatically deteriorating in Egypt. Contrarily to what some Europeans governments pretend that Sisi is the strong man that Europe' needs. It is not, and everybody pointed out to me that security is dramatically deteriorating in Egypt.
