MEPs debate the US-Israel military operation against Iran, its consequences and the need to support Iranians, as well as expectations for the 19-20 March EU summit. As the United States and Israeli air strikes in Iran are ongoing, and Iran continues to respond with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and other countries in the region with links to the US, MEPs discuss the latest developments. MEPs also outline their demands for the upcoming EU summit. Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were extracted from Caracas by US soldiers during a pre-dawn raid on 3 January 2026. They were subsequently flown to New York where they are facing court charges, including for narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine to the US, and possession of machine guns. In parallel, President Donald Trump has also announced that Washington will “run Venezuela”, including its oil industry, for the time being.

MEPs debate on EU Defence Readiness. A draft resolution says that, due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, military mobility has become an essential enabler for common European security and defence. It is also now crucial for the security of the EU’s eastern flank, in particular the Baltic countries and Poland. Given the movement of military equipment across the EU can be a protracted effort, MEPs suggest removing existing administrative and financial barriers, as well as infrastructure obstacles to create a ‘military Schengen’.

MEPs debate on EU response to the continuous airspace violations and sabotage of critical infrastructure in the EU originating from Russia and Belarus. The debate comes after Lithuania shut its border crossings with Belarus at the end of October 2025 after authorities detected smuggling balloons drifting from Belarus into Lithuanian airspace. The balloons, officials say, posed a threat to civil aviation and are part of a continuous hybrid operation orchestrated by dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s Belarusian government. The plenary debate with the Commission is also expected to refer to a recent explosion on a railway line in Poland, which Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk referred to as “an unprecedented act of sabotage”.

MEPs debate on the escalation of the war and the humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan. Civil war broke out in Sudan in April 2023 after a brutal power struggle erupted between the Sudanese army and a powerful paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has so far claimed more than 150,000 lives, prompting a famine and claims of genocide in the Darfur region, located in the western part of the country. With the United Arab Emirates having been investigated by a United Nations panel over accusations that it is backing the RSF, there have also been growing calls to end European weapons exports to the Gulf country over fears they might be chanelled to Sudan.
