SOUNDBITE (English), Giovanni LA VIA (EPP, IT), Rapporteur, "The result was very clear, 38 votes in favour of the rejection of the proposal of the Commission which means that there is a clear majority against this proposal which wants to jeopardise the internal market for food and feed for GMO. We don't want a barrier from state to state we want to maintain the single market on this issue."

SOUNDBITE (English), Giovanni LA VIA (EPP, IT), Rapporteur, "it is clear that we want to maintain the single market, single market means that we don't want to have differences from member state to member state. We want to maintain the possibility to use for food and feed GMO products and on the other hand we want to apply the current legislation, but the member state has to take the responsibility of the decision we cannot continue with no opinion from a member state that is the current result. Member states have to take their responsibilities and we want to apply the existing regulation."

SOUNDBITE (English), Giovanni LA VIA (EPP, IT), Rapporteur, "Probably we are going to see a new amendment in the plenary with the aim of asking for a new proposal on this; we are going to see the final results of a vote in the plenary and I'm sure that there will be a clear majority for the rejection of this proposal but we have to wait."

SOUNDBITE (English), Giovanni LA VIA (EPP, IT), Rapporteur, "I think that the Commission is not coming with a new proposal but we have to wait the final vote from the plenary because I'm sure that one political group is going to put the question with an amendment and we have to express our will on that amendment. There are many political groups who want to vote in favour and others will be against, but at the end we have to see and then for the final result, and for having the final position of the Parliament, we have to wait for the final vote in the plenary."
