MEPs debate common criteria for lower skilled workers entering the EU for seasonal work. New controls enforce the EU's policy of zero tolerance on overfishing.

One of the strongest elements  of this proposal is to ensure

that the many hundreds of  thousands of seasonal workers,

avoid the extreme exploitation  that we know they suffer.

With nearly 25 million  Europeans unemployed,

MEPs must define the sectors  allowed to employ seasonal workers.

We have difficulty finding locals  to do those jobs.

But this is not so much about  taking away the jobs of the locals

as much as it is filling the jobs  that the locals don’t want to do.

At this stage,  Member States could decide on

the number of seasonal workers  to allow in their countries.

To avoid temporary stays  turning into permanent ones,

the length of seasonal work  would be fixed at six months.

A new EU fisheries control regulation  has just been introduced.

The fight against illegal fishing  is clearly going to intensify.

At the moment,  the EU has too many fishing vessels

and overfishing is causing  the depletion of fish stocks.

Illegal fishing on top is  a major problem.

Checks can now  be carried out at any time,

thanks to this kind of electronic logbook.

Data such as the time, date  and amount of fish caught can be stored.

In port, the data will be compared  with the fishermen's declarations.

Unfortunately,  due to excessive bureaucracy,

it will create complications  for the fishermen and the vessels.

It's really crazy  and risks frustrating the measures.

Instead of discouraging illegal fishing,  there's a risk of more.

The new regulation even provides  for EC appointed inspectors

to carry out surprise inspections  in Member States.

The lack of not only political will  but also sometimes of resources,

the investment of those resources  on control mechanisms,

is something that has previously  provoked these attitudes

The fishermen's troubles  are far from over.

On 13th July the Commission will present  a reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.

Replenishing the most threatened fish  stocks will certainly remain the priority.

At the EP, exiled Libyan crown prince  Mohammed El Sinussi

promised to do his utmost  to help restore democracy in Libya.

He supports the idea of a referendum  in which Libyans

will decide between  a constitutional monarchy or a republic.

The Libyan constitution  dates back to 1951

and has been ignored by Gaddafi  since his coup in 1969.

MEPs have met with representatives from  Turkish associations and enterprises

to promote Turkish women's  autonomy and rights,

as well as their role  as engines of progress.

Turkey has to show progress in the areas  of human rights and gender equality.

The Commission tightens rules for former  commissioners going to the private sector

by monitoring  their post-mandate activities

and banning family members  from sitting in their cabinets.

This to avoid conflicts of interests  at all cost.

For the antifraud NGOs  the code of conduct is not strict enough.
