Conclusions of the European Council meeting of 19 March 2026: MEPs debate

MEPs debate the urgent actions required to boost EU competitiveness, deepen the single market, and reduce the cost of living. MEPs outline their priorities for transforming the recommendations in the 2024 Draghi report into reality. They also assess the work already undertaken on the recommendations. In September 2023 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asked Mario Draghi to prepare a report on the future of European competitiveness. The report was completed in September 2024. It looks at the challenges faced by industry and companies and outlines how Europe will no longer be able to rely on many of the factors that have supported growth in the past. It lays out a diagnosis and provides recommendations to put Europe on a different trajectory. Third part of MEPs debate.

Urgent actions to revive EU competitiveness, deepen the EU Single Market and reduce the cost of living - from the Draghi report to reality: MEPs debate (part 3)

MEPs debate debate the need to strengthen EU readiness, preparedness, and solidarity mechanisms following recent extreme weather events in southern Europe. MEPs question Commission representatives on EU action to prevent and prepare for natural disasters, following the launch of the 2025 EU’s Preparedness Union Strategy, and to support EU countries affected by enhancing civil protection and related funding. In early 2026, Portugal, southern Italy and Malta experienced severe weather, including cyclone Harry and storm Kristin, which caused casualties and significant damage to coastal areas. The storms brought floods, landslides, and the highest ever recorded waves in the Mediterranean.

MEPs debate on the situation in Venezuela, following the abduction of ex-President Nicolás Maduro and the need to ensure a peaceful democratic transition. Former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were extracted from Caracas by US soldiers during a pre-dawn raid on 3 January 2026. They were subsequently flown to New York where they are facing court charges, including for narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine to the US, and possession of machine guns. In parallel, President Donald Trump has also announced that Washington will “run Venezuela”, including its oil industry, for the time being.

Situation in Venezuela: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on the protection of minors online. MEPs debate a report calling for accelerating the enforcement of the EU Digital Services Act and the AI Act, while closing legal gaps to ensure online services are safe for minors to use. Sounding the alarm over the mental health risks and rising social media addiction among children and adolescents, MEPs want to ban the most harmful addictive practices for minors and for the EU to take action against persuasive technologies and practices such as targeted ads, influencer marketing, addictive design, loot boxes and dark patterns. The text proposes a common EU-wide minimum age threshold of 16 years for accessing social media platforms and the development of privacy preserving age assurance systems.

Protection of minors online: MEPs debate (part 1)

A delegation from the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Tax Matters (FISC), led by Chair Pasquale TRIDICO, travels to Washington, D.C., for a series of high-level meetings. While on Capitol Hill, the delegation meets with Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, who is also visiting the U.S. capital.

MEPs debate on the recent peace agreement in the Middle East and the role of the EU. Since the announcement of the peace agreement and the coming into effect of the ceasefire the remaining living Israeli hostages have been released in exchange for Palestinians held by Israel. Key aspects of the peace plan, such as the disarmament of Hamas, withdrawal of Israel’s army, and the future governance of Gaza are yet to be resolved.

Recent peace agreement in the Middle East and the role of the EU: MEPs debate (part 2)

MEPs debate on the situation in Gaza. Parliament has called repeatedly – most recently in April – for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, including the unconditional release of all hostages, and free access and sustained distribution of humanitarian and medical assistance in the Gaza Strip. It has also expressed support for the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution. Since 7 October 2023, when the Israeli military launched a campaign in response to the Hamas-led attack in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage, more than 63,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Global food security experts have confirmed a famine in Gaza City, due to the blockade on humanitarian help, and expect it will soon expand to other cities in the Strip.
