The Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), jointly with the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) organise a public hearing on the issue of the new Euro-Atlantic Security Architecture, inviting international experts to share their views with the MEP's, in the European Parliament in Brussels.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Gabriele ALBERTINI (EPP, IT), The future NATO summit in Lisbon in November will discuss the NATO new strategic doctrine. We had the opportunity last 27 of January to listen to Madeleine Albright whit great interest. She chairs the expert group on the subject, on the new strategic doctrine for NATO.

SOUNDBITE (English), Prof. Stefano SILVESTRI, President of International Affairs Institute, The Atlantic Alliance it's loosing at the same the strategic focus and its geographic scope. It has no clear enemy and doesn't know where to act. The fact that the only war that its fighting its very far from the geographic scope of the Washington treaty its a clear indication of that. What does that means for the European security?. Well, doesn't get well because European security and defence does in fact need and effective Atlantic alliance and an effective relationship with US because the Europeans are lacking a number of capabilities , because their defence budgets are inadequate and their expenditures are fragmented nationality.

SOUNDBITE (English), Prof. Daniel HAMILTON, Director of the Center for Transatlantic Relations, Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty, 1st signed in 1990 and adopted in 1999 its not been ratified, and its a burden on the rest of the efforts to move forwards in a broader security framework. Russia's failure to fulfils its commitments its made at the time of the treaty adoption and NATO's failure to ratify means that this is not going forward. The CFE treaty provides a lot a of benefits to everyone in Europe trough transparency, verification, limitation on arms, a lot of things that provide a bases of at least some sort of measures of trust of which one can advance further . By not dealing with the CFE treaty problem I think that talk of other treaties its simply premature. If we can't fulfil the commitment we have made already its hard to start to think about other ones that we would have to engage in.
