As a sign of European solidarity and the decision of Portuguese authorities to declare national day of mourning after the funicular&nbsp;accident in Lisbon, the European and Portuguese flags are&nbsp;on half-mast in front of Parliament buildings on 4th of September 2025 . At least 16&nbsp;people died after funicular crash in Lisbon on 3rd September with many more injured.

António COSTA, Portuguese Prime Minister, is the third EU leader to debate the future of Europe with MEPs and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the EC, on Wednesday morning.

The Europeans want the EU to change. This is why the European Parliament is taking the leadership over a reform of the EU.

Parliament set out its vision for the future of Europe in three resolutions voted in plenary session on 16 February 2017. MEPs suggested, among other things:

<ul>
	<li>turning the Council of Ministers into a genuine second legislative chamber, and its configurations into preparatory bodies similar to Parliament’s committees,</li>
	<li>appointing an EU finance minister and giving the EU Commission the power to formulate and give effect to a common EU economic policy, backed up by a euro-area budget, and</li>
	<li>creating a fiscal capacity consisting of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) and specific additional budgetary capacity for the euro area, funded by its members as a part of the EU budget.</li>
</ul>

Debate on the Future of Europe with António COSTA, Portuguese Prime Ministe

From January to June 2021, Portugal held the Presidency of the EU Council, following the German Presidency and preceding the Slovenian Presidency.

Portugal presided over the Council of the European Union for the fourth time, since 1992.

Portuguese Presidency of the Council declared the importance of strengthening Europe's resilience and its citizens' confidence in the European social model, promoting a Union based on shared values of solidarity, convergence and cohesion – a Union capable of coordinated action to recover from the crisis.

On the occasion of her official visit, President Roberta Metsola engages in a series of official meetings and events in Portugal.

The President unveils a commemorative plaque marking the 40th anniversary of Portugal’s EU accession with Portugal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, at Jerónimos Monastery, followed by a doorstep.

She holds meetings with regional leaders, including Miguel Albuquerque, President of the Regional Government of Madeira, José Manuel Bolieiro, President of the Regional Government of the Azores, and José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, President of the Assembly of the Republic.

The President also engages with the Business Roundtable Portugal (BRP) and meets with Civil Protection and firefighters at their headquarters. She delivers an address at the closing concert of the Santo António Festival in Belém.

Additionally, she meets with Surf Adaptado and children with special needs, followed by a keynote speech at the NOVA School of Business & Economics graduation ceremony.

His Majesty Felipe VI, King of Spain, and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa address MEPs on Wednesday at 12.00 during a formal sitting.

Spain and Portugal signed their accession treaties to join the then-European Communities on 12 June 1985 and their membership became effective on 1 January 1986. Their integration in the European project was widely seen as a key step in full transition of the two countries to democracy, after several decades of dictatorship, which ended in 1974 in Portugal and 1975 in Spain.

The EU has further expanded since 1986, growing from 12 to 27 member states.
