In Strasbourg, high definition television, is presented to Members. It's a first experience of television with a cinema style screen (16:9) and cinema type quality of picture. The technology behind the new system has been developed as a European community initiative. At stake is the worldwide market for this next stage in television development, with only the Japanese offering a viable alternative. The system on display is the product of four years of research from the community, Eureka HDTV project. It uses digital technology and direct broadcast by satellite and will allow multilingual soundtrack's.

On show this week in Strasbourg, high definition television, European style. Members were offered a first experience of television with a cinema style screen and cinema type quality of picture.

The technology behind the new system has been developed as a European community initiative. At stake is the worldwide market for this next stage in television development, with only the Japanese offering a viable alternative.

The system on display is the product of four years of research from the community. Eureka HDTV project. It uses digital technology and direct broadcast by satellite and will allow multilingual soundtrack's.

Yet the system remains compatible with existing six to five line domestic receivers. And the wide screen picture format of the new system can be viewed on old style sets.
