In an interview, rapporteur Laura Ferrara explains how the limits of the European asylum system were tested following the influx of migrants, and how new reforms aim to improve procedures while increasing rights.

Towards a more just and simple asylum system

With the crisis that happened in Syria and also in Libya, 

one that exposed the entire Mediterranean Sea to the continued crossings, 

it has been necessary to revise the entire system.##@#

 It was important to have a concise, efficient procedure, 

one that did not overload the member states with bureaucracy. 

We see a clear length of time: six months for the acceptance 

or the rejection of international protection.

I have noticed that this was one of the most important points. 

It also entailed several social issues for the hosts of the camps, 

because they had to wait for months and months 

before knowing the destiny of the asylum seekers. ##@#

Then, a legal representation is offered to the refugees during all the phases. 

We wanted to guarantee the rights of refugees, in terms of information,

 in terms of procedural guarantee, in terms of video recording of the interviews. ##@#

The member states have a huge responsibility

 because the position of the European Parliament is a first step.
