SOUNDBITE (English) Neil CORLETT, Press unit, Now one of the questions you will no doubt be asking yourselves on a regular basis, as do we, by the way, is how do I explain this complex legislative process and the relevance of the EU to citizens, to your audiences, readers, listeners and viewers? Fortunately for you, our research service has done the job for you. And with that, perhaps a nod to the famous British comedy series Monty Python director, Etienne Bassot, ambassador from the EP think tank, will outline the the project, which has been quite a while in the making, but is well worth your time and effort to check it out. So Etienne, apart from sanitation, education, public order, good roads, fresh water, clean air, health and peace, what has Europe ever done for me?

SOUNDBITE (English) Etienne BASSOT, Director EPRS, Europe has done a lot for you and for all of us. And let's go briefly through a couple of examples. So the idea that is behind the creation of this website is not to explain the EU policy from the point of view of the institutions and from the point of view of the policy makers, but from the point of view of the citizens, something that we had already did in 2019 for the last election, but that we have completely revamped for this election. So it's for them, it's about them, and it's also their language in the sense that, for example, we don't write EU, we write Europe. So that's a simplification, if you like. So it's what matters to people. What matters to people is where they live and what they do in their lives. So that's why we have focussed on impacting by region, impact in my daily life and it's a selection, so we assume subjectivity.

SOUNDBITE (English) Etienne BASSOT, Director EPRS, There are examples about what the European Union is doing and it's not everything, it's not a database and we try to have an easy to read short, concrete and it's in all EU language. If you now Google what EU does for me, you will land in your language on this resource and I encourage you, that's my aim for the end of this meeting, that you have downloaded on your Android, or your iPhone. For those who are familiar, it's revamped from 2019, we have more projects, we changed the design with maps and notes, we have pins on the maps with location of projects. So it's not just in the picture of a certain moment. It's all the region or the province concerned. It's more content. And this legislature, as was said by Jaume and by you, it was really very active. So we have tried to reflect the big changes of this legislative term and it's more relevant, shorter policy briefings, top things for you to address citizens. And we have taken the Eurobarometer as a...

SOUNDBITE (English) Etienne BASSOT, Director EPRS, So I'm going now to go through examples in these three categories and starting by the region. So this is an example. If you have done it on your iPhone, this is for Europe and for France and you see that you have the larger regions and then you have the departments. And in each of them you have quite a series of projects. This is the departement we are digging in, in one example. And I would like just to dig further into one example that is shown for this one. As you know, it is a border region to Spain. And there is an interesting project that has been financed by the EU where patients in need of care benefit from a transborder project between Spain and France. And this is actually a project that is funded by relatively little money. It's one and a half million euro, but it's very significant for the locals.

SOUNDBITE (English) Etienne BASSOT, Director EPRS, And it's also, if you like, the results of these developments in the health field, in the health policy under this term. Let's go further and let's look at further examples. So this is in my life. So you can go to certain territory, but you can also look at things that are important to you in your life my rights, my freedoms, my world, my area, my planet, and so on. Or what you were mentioning at the start. And for each of these we have examples. You are journalists, most of you are journalists here. So we have, for example, content about defenders of media freedom. We know that there is a lot that has been going on and this term on this issue and also with this legislation that's going on.

SOUNDBITE (English) Etienne BASSOT, Director EPRS, 'Another good example is voters with disabilities. As you know, there is a programme from the Commission that helps voters with disability to take part to this democratic exercise of choice. And these are two examples. We can go further and we have the In Focus section. This is more bit the research side of the more in-depth side of the project where we have done about 30 sort of chapters for the different policies. And that's where you find also issues like what the EU has done for Ukraine, the aid for Ukraine or, something about energy, EU promoting recovery, resilience and employment. So overall this project is 7000 dots on the European maps. Again, example, but you can always dig in in hyperlinks to learn more. And it's 400 about social life and it's a 330 a condensed about in focus policy. That's thanks a lot.
