Véronique TRILLET-LENOIR (Renew, FR), presents her draft report "Strengthening Europe in the fight against cancer – towards a comprehensive and coordinated strategy" to the Members of the Beating Cancer Committee, in the European Parliament in Brussels. The draft proposes concrete actions and tools in the fields of health and research, including ambitious legislative proposals to reduce tobacco and alcohol consumption, promote healthy eating and regular physical activity, and encourage vaccination against certain cancers.

There are four main areas of action: prevention, screening and early diagnosis, fair access to good quality treatment and support for survivors and the people taking care of them.

There is a lot of hope that patients have who are waiting for efficient treatments and 12 million survivors also have hopes when it comes to returning to their normal life.

SOUNDBITE (English), Peter LIESE (EPP, DE), Tobacco is still the problem, number one, and we have to face it with different means.

SOUNDBITE (English), Peter LIESE (EPP, DE), Some people say that e-cigarettes is as dangerous as cigarettes, but it's scientifically not true. When heavy smokers can change to the e-cigarettes, we can save lives.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish), Nicol&#225;s GONZ&#193;LEZ CASARES (S&amp;D, ES), We think it is necessary to set more tangible objectives for the prevention of 40% of cancer cases. We also need to change the tobacco directive and be stricter on certain aspects that were mentioned here. We need to stress there is no safe level of alcohol consumption and also we need to ensure protection of workers against exposure to carcinogens at work. So we need to have more ambitious goals in that regard.

SOUNDBITE (Italian), Pietro FIOCCHI (ECR, PT), We also have to look at the whole question of the European database, which is very important for everything, in particular rare types of cancer.

SOUNDBITE (Greek), Giorgos GEORGIOU (The Left, CY), This effort shows that cancer knows nothing of different political parties, different opinions or religions. It is very positive that the rapporteur has highlighted that there are many inequalities in terms of care and treatment for cancer. As my colleague mentioned earlier, the Cypriot citizens receive different care than the French citizens or the German citizens. It is also important to make sure that health care is a public good in order to do that.
