The LUX Audience Award is presented every year by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, in partnership with the European Commission and Europa Cinemas. The award celebrates European cinema and its aim is to raise awareness of Europe’s social, political and cultural issues. The five films nominated for the LUX Audience Award’s fourth edition, 20 000 Species of Bees, Fallen Leaves, On the Adamant, Smoke Sauna Sisterhood and The Teachers’ Lounge, were publicly unveiled during the Venice International Film Festival in presence of Members of European Parliament, audience, filmmakers and film professionals. SOUNDBITE (English), Sabine VERHEYEN (EPP, DE), At the Venice event, at the Venice Film Festival, the five nominees for the Lux Prize were selected. And what is important for the movies who want to take part in this wonderful competition is that they have to tell European stories, stories about our values, stories that are told and listened to in Europe. 

SOUNDBITE (English), Sabine VERHEYEN (EPP, DE), I think the European cinema is important. It's a piece of our culture. It's a piece of the identity for people, and it's a very important part of our cultural experience. To go to a cinema is always an experience you share with other people. It's not just sitting on the sofa watching a movie, it's more than that. And that is what we want to foster. We want to bring forward the European cinema landscape and the European film with this prize. So what we do for the movies when they are part of the selection panel is that we subtitled them so that everyone in Europe can take part in this selection. And what is very important also that everyone is also able to vote for a movie and to make their own choice.

SOUNDBITE (English), Sabine VERHEYEN (EPP, DE), I think that's a good thing also to remind people that the European elections will take place on the 9th of June. I think that's very, very important also to have this other way of reaching out to people with European values and what Europe is standing for via this selection and via the the Lux Prize. And I think the Lux Prize is also something that gives possibilities to discuss about our European values and also about the European Union.

The films are also in the cinemas during the next month, but if you watch it via Parliament screening or by a commercial screening, you always can vote for the movies on the platform and rate each and every movie
