On 9 May 2015, Europe Day, Martin Schulz, President of the EP, made a short speech at the opening of the EU pavilion at the EXPO 2015 Universal Exhibition in Milan. Centred on the theme of global food and nutrition challenges, EXPO is an opportunity for the EU to showcase its work in different food related areas and help raise awareness of this important global issue.

SOUNDBITE (English), Martin SCHULZ, EP  President, saying that the fight against hunger, sustainable food, more just and fair access to natural resources, especially to water: these are the big challenges of the world in the 21st century; the EU is one of the global actors, especially in environmental questions and questions of sustainable food and food security; so we have to contribute to the solutions needed to avoid also military conflicts about access to water, access to natural resources; saying that he is therefore very grateful that the idea behind the EU pavilion is "what can the EU do to provide people worldwide with food?"; saying that it is an honour for him to open the pavilion; thanking the organizers and the visitors.
